Philosophy and Objectives for Practicum and Internships
Philosophy and Objectives
Expectations for the counseling experiences gained from field placements are aligned with the standards set forth by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). For detailed information on these standards, please refer to the CACREP 2016 standards.
Practicum Objectives
During the practicum experience, students are expected to receive significant supervision of their direct work with clients. Direct counseling work is fundamental during this phase, with a focus on developing solid individual and group counseling skills. The objectives include:
- Receiving supervision from cooperating counselors, with additional support provided through weekly group seminars and individual/triadic supervision by a university supervisor.
- Exploring a range of professional counseling activities while emphasizing the development of counseling skills.
- Engaging in intensive supervision to ensure competence in individual and group counseling settings.
Internship Objectives
In the internship experience, students are expected to perform the full spectrum of counseling activities and services. The objectives include:
- Completing a total of 900 hours of clinical experience, with a minimum of 360 hours dedicated to direct service.
- Engaging in a comprehensive range of counseling activities under the supervision of site supervisors.
- Receiving individual supervision from cooperating counselors, supplemented by group supervision led by the seminar professor, who is also available for individual support and guidance as needed.
These objectives aim to ensure that students receive a well-rounded and hands-on learning experience that prepares them for professional practice in the field of counseling.
