What to Expect During the Semester

Orientation

  • When graduate students begin working with you, expect to provide them with an appropriate orientation to your site. Most graduate students are unsure of your expectations for them, therefore during the first several weeks of the semester provide them with clear direction and structure.
  • As the semester progresses and routines develop, support the graduate student in becoming more independent as appropriate to your work site. Make sure you take the time for supervisory discussions. Students need at least one hour of individual supervision per week.
  • Provide opportunities for supervision of the student's work either by review of electronic recording or live supervision.
  • As you gain confidence in the graduate student's counseling skills, provide opportunities for the student to work with clients without direct live supervision.
  • Most cooperating counselors find that several brief conversations/meetings across the day work best. Counseling interns progress at different rates so be sure to tailor the experience according to the abilities and needs of the graduate student.

Evaluations

  • The site supervisor is required to complete two performance evaluations each semester, at the midpoint and at the end of the semester. The evaluations are completed online through a portal called Anthology Portfolio.
  • The evaluations require a quantitative review, but also allow for qualitative comments from the cooperating counselor. Practicum Performance Evaluation. Internship Performance Evaluation
  • The Field Placement Coordinator will provide you with instructions on how to access the evaluation form online, as well as a timeline before each evaluation period begins.
  • Upon completion, please review the mid-term and final performance evaluation with your student.
  • During EDU 679 MH Practicum, the field placement coordinator will be in contact with site supervisors biweekly, and request the completion of a brief evaluation form tracking each student's progress. Bi-Weekly Evaluation
  • If you require consultation regarding expectations for the site experience, please do not hesitate to contact the Field Placement Coordinator or the professor leading the seminar at any time.

Hour Logs

  • It is the student's responsibility to track their weekly hours and completing a monthly hour log. Site supervisors will need to sign off on completed hours monthly, and the student is responsible for submitting hour logs on time to the Field Placement Coordinator via Canvas.

Compensation

  • Niagara University provides compensation for site supervisors. Supervisors have the choice between a stipend or a tuition voucher towards a graduate course at Niagara University. The stipends and vouchers are distributed after the semester concludes. For detailed information on amounts, please contact the Field Placement Coordinator.
